40th Anniversary Schedule of Events

Friday, March 6, 2026:

6:00 AM : Dawn Ceremony, Fall of the Alamo - sponsored by the Alamo Trust, Inc.

Alamo Plaza - Recommend arriving at about 5:30 a.m. Seats fill up fast; folding/portable chairs are permitted and encouraged.

Note: This traditional event is held each year to honor the fallen heroes of the Battle of the 
Alamo. No RSVP or registration required. 

Following the Dawn Ceremony: Breakfast at the Buckhorn - Sponsored by the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum

Buffet-style breakfast is available following the Dawn Ceremony. Self-pay at the breakfast. Two blocks west of Alamo Plaza on Houston St. Just follow the crowd.

NOTE: This traditional event is provided courtesy of Texas Bob Reinhardt. The more the merrier! No RSVP or registration required. 

Between 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM (approximately) - Bowies at the Buckhorn

Bring your biggest and baddest Bowie(s) to enter our prize drawing! This event will be held at the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum during the breakfast event following the Dawn Ceremony. Anyone my participate in displaying their Bowie knife, however, only AHS members will be entitled to enter the contest. This traditional event is sponsored by AHS member Chris Nolen (LA).

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM - DUSK CEREMONY ‒ Sponsored by the Alamo Trust, Inc, and Alamo Defenders Descendants Association (ADDA)

Alamo Plaza - This event is similar to the Dawn Ceremony with Roll Call, guest speakers, flowers, etc., and serves as March 6 closing commemoration honoring the Alamo heroes.

7:00 PM - 11:00 PM - AHS Fandango

Party at Tom & Maggie Masinter’s home: 110 Cotillion Dr, San Antonio, TX 78213 (see map). 15 min from Alamo Plaza. Uber, Lyft, or arrange carpool. See map (page 3) or use GPS. $10 charge: Pre-register or pay at the door. Also, donations accepted at the door to offset expenses.

Event includes:

  • Live musical entertainment with mariachis and a reenactment of the Flamenco table dance performed by Teresa Champion’s daughter. Teresa Champion, who performed the Flamenco dance in Wayne’s Alamo movie, will be in attendance.

  • Period attire or western attire is highly encouraged, but not required.

  • Live auction.

  • Homemade tamales, chili, queso, rice & beans, guacamole, etc.

  • Beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages provided, or bring your own preferences.

Saturday, March 7, 2026

7:00 AM - Field Trip - Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site

This event is open ONLY to AHS members, their families, and guests. ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED - $50.00 each, non-refundable. Gather in front of Emily Morgan Hotel at 6:30 am. Bus leaves promptly at 7 am.

  • Charter motorcoach with amenities, seating capacity of 50. Please book quickly.

  • Tour the newly-renovated site and grounds where the Constitutional Convention was held and the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on March 2, 1836.

  • This “Birthplace of Texas” site re-opened on Nov 8, 2025 and includes an expanded Star of the Republic Museum, Independence Hall, two theaters, interactive exhibits, recreated Washington town, and Barrington Living History Farm.

  • “Dutch treat” box lunch available onsite.

10:00 AM -3:00 PM-ish - 40TH ANNUAL ALAMO HISTORICAL SOCIETY SYMPOSIUM

Menger Hotel ballroom Doors open at 9:00 am. Program begins at 10:00 sharp! Public is invited. AHS members pre-pay $25 each (online pre-payment/registration) or $30 each at the door. $35 each for non-members.

  • KEYNOTE SPEAKER BILL CHEMERKA, Founder of The Alamo Society – FORTY YEARS OF REMEMBERING THE ALAMO SOCIETY How did our predecessor organization get started back in 1986? Bill will discuss that and reminisce about past Alamo Symposia, producing 132 issues of The Alamo Journal over a 30-year-period, and Society-related stories up until his 2017 retirement as our esteemed founder and leader.

  • GLENN EFFLER ‒ FLAGS OF THE ALAMO AND THE INFLUENCE OF CAPT. JOSE JUAN SANCHEZ NAVARRO What flag or flags were raised over the Alamo? What does the evidence indicate? Glenn will present all the facts, fiction, and theories pertaining to the chosen banner of the Alamo defenders, including the influence of the curious depiction of the Alamo known as the "Vista," drawn by Jose Juan Sanchez-Navarro.

  • WADE DILLON ‒ GO AHEAD: CREATING A GRAPHIC NOVEL ABOUT DAVY CROCKETT Artist and museum professional Wade Dillon will discuss developing his graphic novel that explores the last month of David Crockett’s life. Wade will describe how his own personal journey with loss and grief helped him find Crockett’s voice during the Texas Revolution.

  • SHERRI DRISCOLL ‒ THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF THE ALAMO Several of the defenders’ mothers, sisters, wives, and children brought into the Alamo before the final assault, would be the only eyewitnesses to the brutal defeat inside the walls. Sherri Driscoll will explore their experiences, and that of many of the Alamo defenders, as seen through their eyes.
